Can CBD treat anxiety?

What we know already

We have written a lot about how high-dose CBD Oil can be used in the management of schizophrenia, insomnia and even has potential to manage autism one day! CBD is regularly championed for its ability to alleviate anxiety and promote a feeling of well-being. We will explore the evidence which shows how you can use CBD supplements to deal with anxiety, and how to vanquish the negativity anxiety can bring to your life.

"Clinical trials have suggested that CBD can reduce performance anxiety in normal people... Anyone struggling with anxiety should consider supplementing with CBD"

Briefly – what is anxiety?

Anxiety in itself is not a bad thing! Our bodies may cause us to feel nervous, alert or even scared in appropriate situations to heighten your senses and stimulate you in preparation for a challenge. If you have ever had difficulty concentrating, an increased pulse rate or shortness of breath – you have had symptoms of anxiety! It is very common, but if you are regularly anxious at inappropriate times it can be a cause for concern. Issues can arise if your body precipitates this response to stress unnecessarily – that is, causing you to feel anxious and afraid in an uncontrolled fashion. This inappropriate panic and fear can interfere with your daily life, making it difficult for you to live and thrive.

Anxiety and your mental health

Anxiety is a symptom of many disorders, and can be linked to depression and many other severe mental health disorders. Panic attacks and phobias of normal activities are manifestations of anxiety disorders. Our customers have reported that CBD has helped them reduce the frequency and intensity of panic attacks – episodes where they experience extreme distress and fear.

Anxiety-related disorders include:

- Social Anxiety Disorder

- Panic Disorder

- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

and many more...

Many people experience anxiety, and we believe one method of coping with anxiety is to supplement with CBD which can elevate your mood, alongside more conventional therapies.

What can CBD do to treat anxiety

Scientists have begun researching the link between CBD and anxiety. We are already aware that uncontrolled anxiety is the result of a malfunctioning response to stress in the brain. Neurotransmitters in the brain are released incorrectly, triggering structures such as the hypothalamus (which controls the fight-or-flight response) into action when it is not needed. This leads to difficulties such as a raised heart rate, stomach 'butterflies' and extreme tension.

CBD has the potential to treat a range of anxiety-related conditions, such as Social Anxiety Disorder. The study scanned the brains of participants, some of whom were given CBD, and some who were given a placebo. The double-blind trial showed that CBD was associated with reduced anxiety, and reduced brain activity in regions associated with anxiety. Whilst the study of the link between CBD and anxiety is in its infancy, these results are promising for the future.

Many of us suffer from anxiety, without having symptoms severe enough to warrant an official diagnosis of an anxiety disorder. However, CBD can still play a role in elevating mood and reducing general anxiety levels. Clinical trials have suggested that CBD can reduce performance anxiety in normal people. A 2011 study showed that a single dose of CBD reduced anxiety, discomfort and increased alertness in volunteers who struggled with public speaking. Anyone struggling with anxiety should consider supplementing with CBD.

As previously mentioned, suffering with anxiety can lead to difficulty sleeping. If this applies to you, why not check out our article on CBD and sleep?

What are some other ways of coping with anxiety?

There are plenty of resources to assist you in naturally coping with anxiety. Here at CBD Products 420, we recommend some of the following anxiolytic stress-busters!

- Exercise, such as jogging

- Deep meditation

- Keeping a stress diary to track and manage your feelings

- Maintaining a healthy sleep pattern

- Ensuring a balanced diet

There are also pharmacological management strategies to dealing with anxiety. Your doctor may prescribe you medication such as an SSRI - a class of anti-depressants to help you deal with anxiety.

Talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy are also very effective. These sessions are facilitated by a qualified psychologist, and seek to appreciate and slowly eliminate your sources of anxiety.

Is CBD a miracle cure?

To put it simply - no. CBD is not the magic bullet if you suffer from an axiety-related disorder. We suggest you supplement a healthy diet and plenty of exercise with our CBD supplements, of which we have a wide range. Ultimately, defeating anxiety requires long-term strategy and support, which enables you to look after yourself.
