Medical marijuana AND CBD Oil has a renowned ability to provide symptom relief through its cannabinoid system to offer symptomatic relief to a vast array of major diseases. Cancer and multiple sclerosis are just a few. A not so well renowned disease that it can help is called Dystonia.
Dystonia is a movement disorder causing your muscles to involuntarily contract. These contractions lead to repetitive movements and twisting, which can be painful at times. In general, the cause is unknown, however it is known to have links to the basal ganglia. This is the rea of the brain which controls muscle contractions. Dystonia is also found to be a sign of other illnesses, e.g. Parkinson’s.
Some symptoms of Dystonia are:
Cramping in the foot/ feet
Involuntary pulling of the neck
A “dragging leg”
Muscle fatigue and stress from constant spontaneous movements can be one of the things that prompt the other symptoms to become worse. Strong pain killers (like opioids) and muscle relaxers provides some relief. Pain experienced can vary from nothing to severe, all depending on the personal tolerance and the source of the problem.
How does CBD help dystonia
After extensive research it has been found that Cannabidiol (CBD) is one safe alternative, due to its powerful analgesic mechanism, extremely low risk for addiction and virtually no adverse effects. Thus, CBD has anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, among others.
Another disease that disrupts signals between the brain and the rest of the body is Multiple Sclerosis (MS). CBD has been shown to improve some symptoms in this neurological problem, such as decreases muscle spasms.
Literature continues to include more case reports and surveys of CBD´s benefits. According to a case reported, a patient with dystonia secondary to Wilson’s disease, obtained marked improvement in response to the inhalation of Cannabis. Another published paper review found that the use of Cannabidiol showed a dose-response relationship, in order to see changes in dystonia.
Although studies in this area are difficult to do, there is a clear role for cannabis products in symptom management for this neurologic condition.
Is there a cure for dystonia?
There’s no known cure for dystonia as of yet. However, in many cases, the condition doesn’t shorten the lifespan of a person. Dystonia is thought to come from a part of your brain known as basal ganglia.
This group of subcortical nuclei in your brain monitors the speed of movement and controls undesired actions. They’re responsible for sending your muscles signals that instruct them when to move and when to stop moving. With dystonia, these basal ganglia instructions become chaotic and irregular and cause your unwanted muscle contractions and movements.
Research has found that medical cannabis for dystonia does improve symptoms. Cannabis contains two main cannabinoids that activate the CB1 and CB2 receptors of your endocannabinoid system. These are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), and they help regulate the inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters necessary to diminish muscle tremors and spasticity.
What symptoms of Dystonia will CBD help treat ?
Contorting muscles and repetitive spasms not only define dystonia, but they’re also often accompanied by neuropathic pain. The pain can target any extremity, including your hands. Disabling and painful dystonias can occur in your shoulder, neck and facial areas, and prevent you from being able to speak, move or walk if left untreated.
Although technically the CBD may not fully cure the condition anymore, it had been said it does seem to help relieve some muscle spasming associated to Dystonia. It has also been said to eliminate pain and cause your muscles to unclench and relax to the point where they aren’t severely disabled anymore. Usually the analgesia is more potent when mixed with THC.
