Mustafa’s story: How CBD helped me get a good night’s sleep

I really struggled to get a good night’s sleep before I tried CBD.

Where I was

I never had insomnia, and I could confidently be asleep within 15 minutes of crawling into bed. What I needed was something to help me stay asleep and feel properly rested the next morning. For around a year, I struggled to get good sleep and couldn’t refresh myself for the challenges of life.

Struggling to get back to sleep after waking up in the night, I would toss and turn. Eventually, I might just throw my sheets on the floor in sheer frustration! Lying awake at night is infuriating, because the harder you try to relax, the more difficult it is to actually fall asleep.

Being trapped in a cycle of almost drifting off and then getting annoyed when you can’t is pretty galling. If I did manage to fall asleep again, I was pretty groggy the next morning and quite useless until at least 11 am the following day.

I resolved to make a change about my sleep. Something had to give!

What I wanted

Sports are a big part of my life. I play for the university football team, and take great pride in my physical fitness. I love to sprint down the left wing and float crosses into the box like Gareth Bale. Well, not quite like Gareth Bale – I don’t get benched as often as him! Jokes aside, when I woke up feeling flat and lethargic, I knew it would have an impact on my game.

Sure enough, waking up hours too early and getting 6 broken hours of sleep affected my form. I found myself fatiguing earlier and didn’t give 100% at training. Frankly, I was disappointed.

I started looking into how to sleep the night through, without waking up.

What I found

Good sleeping practises got me halfway. I woke up in the night less, and was even quicker to get to sleep in the evenings. I discovered sleep hygiene, the practise of controlling your environment to make it more conducive to rest.

Removing distractions and creating routine can go a long way. I highly recommend researching the topic if you are willing to make a long-term change. I had some successes, but I still juddered awake two or three times in the night.

Close, but no cigar.

CBD in the mix

I had read about how CBD can help you get deeper sleep and feel more rested. In fact, one of my football team-mates was regularly using CBD to help him sleep and get more focused. I asked for his recommendation, and the rest was history.

Where I am now

I love to vape my CBD carts, and attribute my better sleep habits to CBD usage. Every morning I wake up to the sound of my alarm, feeling rejuvenated and ready to go. Rarely am I red-eyed and groggy, up 2 hours before it goes off.

I’m back in the first XI for university football, as my fitness and drive has improved since I started sleeping more and feeling better. The changes to my academic work have been more subtle, but I’m just grateful to be better rested. Taking back control of my rest was the best thing I could do for myself.

Before trying CBD, I would struggle to get 5-6 hours of sleep a night. Nowadays, with a drop of CBD oil an hour before bed, sleeping for 8-9 hours is no problem for me.

What I would say

Sleep problems can be caused by a lot of things like stress, anxiety and even some medical conditions. Investigate what is keeping you up at night before trying a quick fix. Some sleeping pills have more side-effects than they’re worth, so ask yourself if you really need them.

I found that changing my sleep hygiene was part of the journey and CBD helped me reach the destination.
