Reducing strain - CBD to alleviate chronic pain

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is one of the many natural substances present in the Cannabis sativa plant. Unlike THC – another chemical compound found in the plant – it does not get you ‘high’. CBD has many beneficial therapeutic uses. Through research, scientists have begun to understand how CBD can modulate processes within your body.

CBD has been in the spotlight recently as European and US medical researchers have discovered the potential for CBD to treat serious conditions such as autism, multiple sclerosis and even epilepsy.

By interacting with your endocannabinoid system, CBD can reduce inflammation, promote a sense of wellbeing, and even help alleviate anxiety.

Anecdotal evidence has always existed of CBD’s inherent ability to reduce pain and promote a sense of wellbeing. World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall regularly details his use of CBD to recover from injuries he gets in training - to lift over 500kg and shatter world records! Legendary actor Morgan Freeman is also a proponent of CBD. Following a life-changing car accident, Freeman swears by CBD to reduce pain from the nerve damage he sustained, and to cope with his chronic fibromyalgia.

What do scientists say?

A groundbreaking study by Wade et al. took a group of patients suffering chronic pain due to conditions ranging from multiple sclerosis, spinal cord and even limb amputation. They found that by dosing the patients with a THC and CBD extract, there was a clear improvement in symptoms and evident pain relief. The trial, which was double-blind and placebo-controlled, scientifically recorded severity of pain on a scale on a daily basis. More research and more patients are always needed to confirm findings, but the headline was clear – cannabis medication can reduce pain and suffering.

"Dosing patients with CBD... led to a clear increase in pain relief"

We have already explored the link between CBD and the immune system – the headline being that CBD can reduce inflammation. As inflammation in the body can cause pain, it follows that CBD can reduce pain due to infections and various autoimmune processes. A study conducted in 2009 proved that cannabinoids suppress the immune response appropriately, in animal trials. The research team concluded that CBD may play a large role in the future of managing these conditions. The pain caused by liver failure, multiple sclerosis and even colitis may one day be mitigated by medications containing cannabis!
