Ruva’s story: CBD and my inner peace
Forgive me for being forward, but have you ever had a panic attack?
Have you known the crushing sensation in your chest, the sinking feeling as your breath is robbed while your lips grow cold? You float away, your head is in an entirely different place to your body. It’s impossible to think, and even harder to breathe. Eventually, you can no longer sustain this egregious assault on your senses and you come round.
I was all too familiar with panic attacks for much of my twenties. A combination of difficult family circumstances and work issues left me in a difficult place. If it wasn’t for the support of my friends and my CBD usage, I don’t know where I would be!
CBD is a chemical that can be found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. Despite what your parents may have said, CBD oil is completely legal. THC is another chemical, which gets people ‘high’. THC products are illegal, and companies in the UK have to make sure that anything they sell has no THC in it.
Did you know that your body has specific systems that respond to CBD? The ‘endocannabinoid’ system in the human body reacts very interestingly when it receives CBD. Scientists have found that CBD can help you control your mood and feel less anxious in stressful situations.
I am a CBD advocate after 3 years of using high-quality CBD. I used to take the edibles on-and-off when I first discovered it, and decided it was working so well for me, I started vaporising CBD. I love reading about how it works and what it can do for so many different medical conditions! Scientists are beginning to understand that one of the first things CBD can do, is help people with anxiety.
I can attest to this personally. I have seen many doctors about anxiety as a teenager and struggled with my mood for a long time. I felt low or sad for a lot of my teenage years. Looking back, that time of my life – which is supposed to be filled with learning, wonder and joy – was robbed from me.
I don’t hold a grudge. These things happen. I find inspiration in the little things to keep me going.
One simple quote I discovered from a mindful social media page is in big letters above my bed:
Try it! When my mood gets me down, or things don’t go to plan… we move! I spend hours at my laptop, scouring the net for ways to better control my mood. I feel proactive and empowered when I find little tricks that boost me psychologically.
Taking CBD has been a big part of my recovery, helping me gather momentum to smash the obstacles in my way. I find that a few drops in my evening protein shake, after a (Zoom) Tabata workout, is the easiest way to get it in.
I have faced a lot of challenges and struggled with bad days that have kept me bed-bound. Extensive therapy and counselling has had a big impact on making these days less frequent. I call that part the foundation of my recovery. The talking therapies helped my panic attacks go away, and I started to see a life without anxiety.
Unfortunately, the therapists who look after me are not always there. It’s like being thrown into the deep end without an armband. Taking CBD helps me feel less nervous and stops my volatile mood swings. Now I can swim – no need for armbands!
I am no longer a slave to my mood. Day-to-day, I control my emotions a lot better and feel more certain about my chances. I have to thank my friends and the psycholgists who gave me their time and love. But I would be remiss if I didn’t also give a shout-out to CBD!
